Beyond the tattered carpet and beneath the almost painful fluorescent lights lies The X Files. Three whole shelves of it. The grizzly Nicollet Village Video is a store for the retro movie and television lover, with a selection you'd never expect to see outside of 1993. For a mere $5 for a four-day rental, or $3.50 for a night, the DVD set of My So Called Life or the original series of the Twilight Zone can be yours. This independent video store's specialization in the elusive tape or DVD reveals itself in unexpected categories: Brit Vid, Cult, Performance, Western/War, Classic, Asian/Action, and more. Village Video also has a generous new-release section to compete with Blockbuster's wall-to-wall offerings. Don't expect smiling faces from the store clerks; with a selection like this one, they know they're too cool for that sort of nonsense.

One of the last local independent video stores that's still devoted to diversity, this messy, musty, but quite well stocked outlet continues to impress. On a recent visit, we lingered longest in "Documentaries"--any smart vid store's clearest path to distinction--and found an early-'60s doc by Exorcist director William Friedkin called The People vs. Paul Crump, Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl's 1950 stunner Kon-Tiki, and Jim Hubbard's 69-minute Homosexual Desire in Minnesota.... Mr. Show defended smut with the war cry "In your darkest, loneliest hours, who is there for you? Pornography!" We say if you don't like porn then you don't like sex. For in the great pantheon of recorded rutting, there is something for everyone. Maybe you like award-winning and edgy art films. Maybe you like soft-focus, airbrushed, plot-heavy couples porn. Or maybe you just go for the meat-and-potatoes four-woman-seven-man gang fuck flicks. Whatever gets you off, Nicollet Village Video has... More »
Faced with the DVD juggernaut a few years ago, Nicollet Village Video chose to switch rather than fight, introducing the new format alongside the old not a moment too soon--at least judging by the recent demise of VHS-devoted Discount Video. April 2006 marks the first month in which not a single title sought by Nicollet was available on VHS. So the store has shored up its videodisc catalog, with some shelves reaching toward the ceiling, carrying everything from foreign sleaze to... More »
If Quentin Tarantino had chosen to bring his video-clerking experience to Minneapolis instead of Miramax, we like to think he'd be employed at this expansive storage facility for the film buff's most catholic tastes. Here, in-between duties at the checkout counter, Quentin could curate an in-store film festival that pulled from a superb collection of rare widescreen tapes (Happy Together! Ride in the Whirlwind! Le doulos!), a studiously assembled slew of documentaries, and nearly 60 shelves... More »
You'd expect any video store that keeps Clerks in the "classics" section to have an agreeably flip service ethic and a working knowledge of movie arcana. But Nicollet Village Video somehow surpasses fiction in its almost surreal commitment to Kevin Smith aesthetics. One typical evening finds employee and ex-Magnolias frontman John Freeman puffing a cigarette behind the counter, ashing into a tray hidden by stacks of returned videos. The torture scene from Reservoir Dogs blares from several... More »
