Newspaper Fiction: The New York Journalism of Djuna Barnes, 1913–1919 Recommended

  • Description

The novelist and playwright Djuna Barnes worked as a journalist at a time when the profession was about more than fearing for your job on a daily basis. The women’s rights advocate wrote and illustrated for the Brooklyn Daily Eagle and Vanity Fair from her home base in the bohemian and sexually fluid Greenwich Village a century ago, and her boundary-nudging work as a proto-feminist political journalist is on display in Newspaper Fiction: The New York Journalism of Djuna Barnes, 1913–1919. Barnes later went on to fame as a Parisian expat and the author of lesbian fiction (her most famous novel is Nightwood), but her early work covering literature, news, theater, and society with a decidedly feminist bent used the pages of New York newspapers to contribute to the suffragist movement and to change the way readers saw women in print.
