Village Voice's Description
The West Village incarnation of this national pizza chain, originally founded in Laguna Beach, CA, focuses on creating a healthy, organic alternative to your standard New York slice. Choose from three types of crusts: certified organic, gluten-free or whole wheat. Then choose between skim mozzarella and vegan cheese, followed by one of four sauces: basil pesto, organic tomato, chipotle pesto and roasted garlic. Yes, you can get pepperoni and sausage (chicken cilantro, naturally) on that, but more health conscious consumers might prefer some veggies, like roasted yams, shitake mushrooms and roasted eggplant. Also on the menu are a variety of salads, pastas, healthy sandwiches and rustic flatbreads covered with everything from pear and gorgonzola to curry chicken and yams. While the ingredients might be unusual for New York, the setting is not, with whole pies sitting behind glass counters near giant gas ovens, a few large posters of tomatoes and other vegetables adorning the walls with a few tables set up for the people who want to eat in.—Keith Wagstaff
