Woodlawn Cemetery

Map & Directions 233rd St. & Webster Ave.
Bronx, NY 10470
  • Mon-Sat 8:30am-5pm

Village Voice's Description

Graves, of course, memorialize people other than mummy and daddy. Woodlawn Cemetery, roughly four-fifths the size of Green-Wood at 400 acres, is animated by the histories of its celebrity bodies. Beneath the lawn lie Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Fiorello La Guardia, Herman Melville, Joseph Pulitzer, and suffragist Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Sculptures by well-known artists mark some mausoleums; William Ordway Partridge outfitted Pulitzer's with a bronze sitter reminiscent of The Thinker.

Tips from foursquare

Built in 1910, the mausoleum was designed by the architectural firm of Hunt & Hunt and is a replica of the Chapel of St. Hubert in Amboise, France.

New York's premier spot for famous dead people. Find Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Irving Berlin, Joseph Pulitzer, Herman Melville, Fiorello LaGuardia, Celia Cruz & WC Handy... for starters.

Stop in the main office at Webster Ave., & pick up a map of the famous buried in this enormous cemetery. We saw many names we recognized, including musicians, politicians and even Civil War Generals.

    Forget them...not.

Look through the mausoleum gates to see some beautiful stained glass, some from Tiffany & Co.!
