Village Voice's Description

Named after a plant (also known as moonflower) used by the Aztecs to prepare poultices and induce hallucinations, Toloache is Mexican restaurant with a wood-burning oven at its heart, from which fly a very good quesadilla featuring fresh huitaloche, queso fundido (Mexican fondue), and suckling pig, the latter with a crunchy piece of skin on top, though you must order extra tiny tortillas to go with it. The margaritas are diverse and generally delicious -- we liked the Frida Kahlo margarita, purple, fruity, and decorated with hibiscus. But while the traditional guacamole was good, the version labeled "frutas" and containing apples, mangoes, and peaches, was a misstep. A solid choice for a pre-theater dinner, with a pleasing, upbeat ambiance and generally good service.
