Description

Village Voice's Description

Terroir has a ridiculous amount of wine--a whole binder of the stuff, actually, packed with lists and lists of semi-sweet white wines made with perfume-y riesling grapes, pages of discourse on wine craft, and hyperbolic praise for its producers. Meanwhile, the menu features small plates with downplayed grandeur, such as the "Fried Stuff" section and its gorgonzola-infused beet risotto balls. An impressive variety, overall, considering Terroir squeezes it all into a tiny, 24-seat, bookshelf-equipped, sepia-tinted room. This wine bar is a superstar collaboration between restaurateurs Paul Grieco (a bigger wine connoisseur than Bacchus) and Marco Canora (an Iron Chef), and that's made clear.

The rash of wine bars that opened in the last year felt like it should’ve happened a decade ago, but there’s one new place we count as our favorite addition to the vino scene: Terroir, a 24-seater that’s small on space but big on style. Helmed by the proprietors of Hearth down the block, Terroir has a charming menu (chef and co-owner Marco Canora will have you eating out of his... More >>

Tips from foursquare

Paul Grecco is a mad genius. $6 happy hour & free fino sherry pair beautifully with the tasty small plates and panini menu. -Jacqueline Lombard, Top Chef

  • Adam G. on 03/16/09

Try the beet risotto balls, the lamb meatballs, the duck ham panini, or the ham blade steak. Recommended wine: Paul Achs Zweigelt.

Check out the bathroom here. One of the best in NYC!

  • Alexis A. on 05/03/10

Ask Tanner for his red picks. He'll take excellent care of you. And be sure to try with the fried risotto balls (oxtail and/or beet&gorgonzola).

  • Serious Eats on 03/15/13

One of our favorite wine bars in the city, where novice wine drinkers and oenophiles alike can taste something new.
