Tea & Sympathy
New York, NY 10011
Village Voice's Description
As third-wave coffee shops continue to pop up all over the place, it's obvious there's not much demand for quality tea shops. Tea & Sympathy, in the heart of the West Village, isn’t necessarily looking to change that, but they do offer legitimate British-style tea (including their own blends or a few choice British brands.) Moreover, the joint offers traditional British food, too. Bangers and mash are a highlight, as is the Yorkshire pudding. Go to lunch, though, to get the Afternoon Tea for One, which includes finger sandwiches, tons of scones with cream and jam, cakes, and a big pot of hot tea. Isn't this how royalty stereotypically enjoy themselves? --Shane Barnes

The title of this post captures it all. Genuine British food, exceedingly well prepared, is available in this cosy spot. Prices are rather high, but it is a perfect spot for a treat. The very presentation of the tea (fresh brewed, of course) in unmatched china, with genuine treacle tart on the side if one wishes, is a great pleasure. Varied meat, chicken, and lamb pies are excellent, and the full English breakfast is wonderful. Tea and Sympathy is a very small restaurant and one must not count on immediate seating - or intend to sit and talk for hours after one finishes. The attached shop has wonderful gift items as well as imported food.
