Village Voice's Description

Originally created in 1870 as a pen for the sheep which grazed in the nearby meadow (Sheep's Meadow) in Central Park, Tavern on the Green was transformed into a restaurant in 1934 under the urging of the famous Parks Commissioner Robert Moses. In 1976, with a massive renovation by restaurateur Warner LeRoy, Tavern became what we know it as today: Central Park's own mini-Versailles, a tourist-sucking show palace of copious chandeliers, indoor topiaries, and antique murals.
