Statue of Liberty/Liberty Park

Map & Directions Battery Park
New York, NY 10004

Village Voice's Description

The view is nice from the top (25 windows in the crown symbolize "heavenas rays shining on earth"), but thereas really no reason to spend a whole afternoon, climbing up in the dark. The 130-year old statue, which was designed in part by Gustave Eiffel, is 151 feet high (and 220 tons) If you're not keen on barfy boat rides ( with tourists), the view of the statue from Battery Park is excellent.

Hours: Daily 8:30am-6pm (except Christmas)

It is really fun to take the ferry to the island to see the Statue of Liberty up close! I didn't think it was necessary to go since you can see the statue from Battery Park, but I've been three times now and I love going out there and being so close!

The crown reopened in summer 2009 for the first time since 9/11 and will be open until 2011 when it is closed for renovations.

Head to liberty island before October 2011-- in mid-autumn, the statue will be closed down while a new staircase is installed.

Did you know that in 1983 American Express issued a $1 million travelers cheque - the largest ever issued - to give the Statue of Liberty a face lift for her 1986 centennial?

  • Time Out New York on 11/23/11

Thank publisher Joseph Pulitzer—yes, that Pulitzer—for stimulating enough American donations to pay for Lady Liberty’s pedestal. His statue is at the walkway near the left entrance to the statue.
