Sarge's New York Delicatessen
New York, NY 10016
Village Voice's Description
Founded by a retired policeman in 1964 and now run by his grandchild, Sarge's is one of the city's great Jewish delis. The pastrami is monumentally smoky, delicious even though it's usually cut way too thin (request thick slices). But the corned beef can't measure up. It finds the meaning of its life not in a sandwich, but in the corned beef hash-slivers of salty meat fried crisp that overpower the smidgens of potato. It's wonderful when topped with a trio of poached eggs. And the servers are so gruff they could be character actors playing waiters in a deli. Open 24 hours.
Tips from foursquare
Excellent pastrami and fries. Can you finish “The Monster”? Supposedly NYC largest sandwich. Do it and win a free t-shirt.
Winner of Best Late-Night Eats in the Village Voice 2011 Best Of issue! Come in any 24 hours of the day and ask for an extra-thick sliced pastrami.
One of our favorite spots to get a good pastrami on rye. Don't sleep on the corned beef though, it's mouthwateringly good.
Pastrami sandwich is fantastic here. Worth checking out.
Home of The Monster – just try and finish a $30 Pastrami sandwich on your own. Stop by 24 hours a day and explore the vast menu.
