Map & Directions 490 Riverside Drive
New York, NY 10027

Village Voice's Description

Built to resemble Chartres Cathedral in France, John D. Rockefeller gave significant sums of money and time to this building, which was finally erected in 1931. Martin Luther King Jr. preached here, and Nelson Mandela spoke here, as did other ministerial luminaries. The carillon is the second largest in the world.

It has the longest carillon in the world. Very much worth a visit.

The Cafe is best place around Columbia to grab a sit down meal with friends without breaking the bank. It gets bonus points for being so close to Mudd and the new science building.

Taking pictures with iPad? It's okay, you can go directly to confession!

Is it a church or a mall? With a vintage store, cafe, bookstore, library, and theater, perhaps it's the latter. There is ALWAYS something happening inside. Ask for group tours to the bell tower.

The bourdon (hour) bell is the largest tuned bell in the world, at 20 tons. If you are nearby at the hour, listen for its ravishing low C.
