Before the Meatpacking District transformed into New York's version of South Beach, Keith McNally (Balthazar, Minetta Tavern) took a chance on a neighborhood that was a little rough around the edges. It paid off big time; now his flawlessly stylish faux-Paris bistro is almost always at capacity, filled with European tourists, fashion industry types and others of the air-kissing tribes. All of the McNally design elements are here: the white subway tile, the back-lit bottles, the pressed-tin ceiling. Grab a marble-topped table and experience the bustling scene inside or sit on the sidewalk patio to watch the moneyed masses parade by. Classic bistro fare (think steak frites and skate au beurre noir) is complemented by lighter dishes such as a seared tuna nicoise salad and a sliced steak sandwich with onions and gruyere. If you're looking for a little less of a scene, stop by for breakfast during the week, where you can eat a full English breakfast (two eggs, bacon, fried bread, Cumberland sausage, mushrooms, beans and fried tomatoes) in relative peace before the jet set gets out of bed.—Keith Wagstaff
