Village Voice's Description
The name refers to a pale nutty mole of toasted pumpkin seeds poured over enchiladas stuffed with scrambled quail eggs. Papatzul is New York's only real cognate of Chicago's Frontera Grill, an informal place that specializes in well made regional Mexican fare at prices that fall short of wallet shrivelling. Other admirable dishes include duck enchiladas in a dark, chocolate-laced mole (not mole poblano, but a variation), and a generous heap of guacamole freshly smashed in a metate, the three-legged mortar made of volcanic rock. The margaritas are strong, well formulated, and do not plop out of a machine.
If I could give this place zero stars, I would. All and all, this was the worst restaurant experience I have had in my five years as a New Yorker...and that's saying something. The waitress and hostess were pretty nice, but the manager is so... More >>
If I could give this place zero stars, I would. All and all, this was the worst restaurant experience I have had in my five years as a New Yorker...and that's saying something. The margarita menu looks impressive on paper, but the drinks are all overly sugary and syrupy. The food is bland and tastes prepackaged. The waitress and hostess were pretty nice, but the manager is so unpleasant we wondered if he might have a serious psychological disorder. Worst of all, after eating the food we didn't even like, we were all sick for the entire night after.
If you want rude service, bad food, and food poisoning, this is the place for you. If, however, youâre looking for a nice meal, nice people, and a nice time, youâll need to look elsewhere.
Tips from foursquare
the enchiladas with mole sauce are outstanding
Amazing $6 margaritas during happy hour. Fan-fuckin-tastic.
Order the "el trueno" margartita. you will thank me later!
Try Papatzul’s Baja style fish tacos. They're addictive with chipotle citrus mayo and slaw.
Just ate lunch next to Justin Timberlake
