Village Voice's Description

The lyrical verbiage unfolds as slammers and poets take to the stage at this small mainstay crowded with bare wooden tables for onlookers to hoot and holler from in appreciation. Embracing all of the arts, you can also find emcees, theater performances, jazz weeklies, film screenings, parties, and more in this non-profit space founded in 1973. Open mics also happen on the regular so all you aspiring artists out there can share your craft with like-minded souls.

They do a lot of poetry based events, open mic night, comedy... shit like that. Back in the day you'd find dudes like Common and Black Thought freestylin' up in there. There's always cute earthy-type chicks hangin' out too.

For the Friday Night Poetry Slam, arrive between 9 and 9:30 if you want a seat. (No advance reservations for the Slam Open or the Friday night slam – waiting in line is part of the experience!)

    Great place for poetry.

This acclaimed, longtime community spot is prime if you want to spend a Wednesday or Friday night immersed in some spoken-word while imbibing an alcoholic beverage or two.
