Ninth Street Expresso
New York, NY 10009
Village Voice's Description
It doesn't hurt that the only cute guys in the entire city congregate at Ninth Street Expresso, but that's not why we go to this far-east cafA(c). The owner, Ken Nye, uses a Colombian brand, and (unlike at Starbucks) I never have to tell the baristas how to make the drink. The espresso is smooth and not bitter in the least, and the first time I had one of their lattes with the foam expertly weaved into the shape of a leaf, I felt like I was home. (PS: Ken will eject you from the premises for using the words tall, grande, or venti).
Tips from foursquare
The first specialty coffeehouse in NY. Awesome, awesome coffee, and the baristas as well as the caffeine addicted customers are super friendly.
Selling premium coffees like Oregon's Stumptown and cold-infused El Injerto, this coffee shop leaves competition in the dust. They may make the best cappuccino in the city.
Owner Ken Nye is often credited as the first person to bring serious coffee to New York City in 2001.
raving reviews all around. It is the best espresso in the city, no doubt.
WARNING: Celebrities, notably Jason Schwartzman, have been known to receive preferential treatment here. If your barista is dawdling with your latte to favor his, tell her to "rush more."
