Village Voice's Description

The New Museum. Prompting tourists on the Bowery to look up and ask 'What the hell is that?' since 2002. The eye-catching eight-story building is the work of Japanese architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa/SANAA, but the museum itself has been curating cutting-edge contemporary art since 1977. The whimsical, labyrinthan structure hosts rotating exhibitions as well as concerts and events. It serves as a grand matron to the liter of nascent galleries in surrounding Noho/Soho. Once a rather shady area indeed, this section of the Bowery is now affluent and visitor friendly thanks to NYU and a bevy of close by boutiques and cafes.

Tips from foursquare

  • Concert Ticket Agency on 09/06/12

Founded in 1977. New art, new ideas...amazing. Parties here are a must. Great place to see live music as well.

  • The New Yorker on 08/25/10

Designed by the Japanese architects SANAA: “The visual signals this building sends—it is at once crisp and pliable, solid and permeable—seem deliberately ambiguous.”

  • If you are ever invited to a party there, especially in the Sky Room, go.

  • Louis Vuitton on 08/26/11

Dedicated to contemporary art and innovative media, this museum features a constantly changing array of exhibits so you will always find something new. Enjoy the gorgeous views from the roof.
