Village Voice's Description
Moti Mahal Delux is an Indian spot on the Upper East Side that updates traditional Mughlai cuisine, while still bringing plenty of heat to many of the dishes. Grab an extra napkin and dig into the finger-staining tandoori chicken and lamb kebabs. The sprawling lunch buffet offers tastes of most of the menu (including a full vegetarian option) and is one of the neighborhoods best deals at $11.95. --Mallory Stuchin
I came in on openeing day with a friend to see what all the hype was about. I came in on openeing day with a friend to see what all the hype was about. Having lived in Delhi for many years, I am very familiar with the chain and the history behind the food- we grew up on this stuff. We were seated on a cozy table for two- and ordered the recommendations. First came the appetizers- golgappa shots and romali khasta- both very non traditional and very intersteting. Loved them both. Then came the star dish- the butter chicken, the black daal and to spice it up, we decided to try the tossed crab. All I can say is that it brought back memories from home. Perfectly cooked, balanced and spiced. To end it, we had a very Indian dessert called tuti fruity- the icecream was indian. When you try it, you'll know. I'm glad I live a few block away cause I shall return for more, for sure.
Tips from foursquare
The lamb kebabs are exceptional, as is the thickly seasoned tandoori chicken. Veggies can head to a steaming lunch buffet with vegetarian options as well!
The burrah kebab are truly exceptional, and standards like butter chicken are well-executed.
An international chain specializing in Mughlai, an exceptionally rich and varied branch of Indian cooking. Very vegetarian-friendly.
Phenomenal food: paneer tikka, dahi palak, murgh tandoori, burrah kebab (best thing on the menu), murgh and dal makhani - and, of course, gulab jamun
You're in for a treat with the lunch special. $14 to eat like a king. 2 apps, 1 entree, 1 dessert. Refills. Can't go wrong.
