Village Voice's Description
Morgans Hotel, so named for its proximity to the Morgan Library (the former home of J.P. Morgan), was the first hotel in the Ian Schrager empire. Designed by Andree Putman over 20 years ago to look modern, clean, and elegant, the 113 guest rooms at Morgans are decorated simply and monochromatically and many feature specially commissioned photographs by Robert Mapplethorpe. Like all boutique hotels in the city, rooms are on the small side and, therefore, you are encouraged to spend time in the hotelas communal spaces, like their sexy candlelit bar (aptly named Morgans Bar), or the stark white dining room of the excellent, in-house fusion restaurant, Asia de Cuba.
Tips from foursquare
Did you know that Morgans was the first boutique hotel? Nothing beats the original.
In 1983, Andrée Putman created Morgans, the world’s first boutique hotel. She redesigned it in 1996 and has done it again for the hotel’s 25th anniversary.
