Village Voice's Description
Ensconced in a corner bar in one of Ironbound's dark side streets, McWhorter is a Portuguese churrasqueria, not to be confused with a Brazilian churrascaria. That means that, instead of guys running around in little gaucho pants flinging meat at you, you've got a chill back room where a meat wrangler turns of big hand-rotisserie over a charcoal pit, almost like Texas. From it he pulls luscious pork ribs, plump Portuguese sausages, tender perfectly done chickens, and dryish sirloin steaks. The accompanying rice and pickled veggies form the perfect accompaniments, and, besides an appetizer of garlic shrimp, the menu offers little else. Only a few blocks from the PATH train--bring a Google map.
Tips from foursquare
Just had lunch with my dad: 1 lg wine, 1 soda, whole chicken, whole rib, and a platter of fries for $13. Can't beat that!
Get here early (well before 12) if you want to get a table for lunch, it's a small restaurant.
You're at a BBQ joint--don't get the fish. The BBQ chicken is on point as are the prices, even if it's cash only.
This place has amazing food, at very affordable prices, the menu is not large, but everything is a hit. I live a block away and I eat there at least 3x week!
1/2 BBQ Chicken with fries, rice and a drink for $7. Are you kidding?
