Description

Village Voice's Description

The original Mamoun's opened in Greenwich Village way back in 1971 before eventually expanding to the East Village in 2006. It's amazing it took so long. The little falafel joint is a perfect fit for St. Mark's Place, selling savory falafel sandwiches, filled with crunchy falafel, lettuce, tomato and tahini sauce, for $2.50 to crowds of thrift-conscious teens and 20-somethings until the wee hours of the morning. The space isn't fancy, just a few wooden booths and a long counter made for quickly scarfing down your meal, with two small round tables outside just in case you want to people-watch as you eat. Vegan-friendly menu items include pitas packed with baba ghanouj, tabouleh or hummus, while carnivores can choose from lamb or chicken shawarma and a variety of kebabs. Wash it all down with hot tea and mango or tamarind juice. While most people get their food to go, you will find the place packed after all of the bars in the neighborhood close at 4am.—Keith Wagstaff

Best Falafel in NY, hands down. Also, don't miss the hot sauce they make in house, really solid stuff

the most amazing shawarma (especially when paired with the whole wheat). get the hummus on the side and save it for a good late-afternoon snack

Wow, fuck the hot sauce. Way too brutal.

A cab caught fire outside Mamoun's and I tried putting it out with their red sauce but the cab transported to hell and exploded instead.
