Village Voice's Description
Lucy's is named after the Betty White of Alphabet City: a beloved,
alcohol-distributing grandmother figure who presides over a motley mix
of locals, regulars, and neighbors. From the sheet-covered windows,
you can tell that this quintessential dive is something more than a
quintessential dive-it's a clubhouse. People know each other's names here. Fitted with two pool tables, non-seasonal Christmas lights, and neon beer signs, it has all the dive-bar conventions minus the faux-antique decor of neighboring bars--everything in here has aged through genuine repeated use. Make sure to say hi to Lucy when you drop by; she'll be smiling behind the bar.
Tips from foursquare
They have a jukebox with Motley Crue, Pink Floyd, & Britney Spears, along with pool tables. You'll be sitting next to some eccentric artist & some fancy person, so it's kinda cool.
Perhaps my memory deceives me but I remember "Lucy" telling me back in 2000 that her name wasn't Lucy. A decade later she's relented to eponymity.
Probably the cheapest whiskey in the EV. Great way to end the night.
Expect nothing and gain everything - this place is a classic East Village dive that you can't help but fall in love with!
Best dive bar, best East Village bar, best New York bar, best end-of-night bar — Lucy's is all these, and a great jukebox bar too. Also in the mix, cheap (and strong) rail drinks.
