Village Voice's Description

Executive chef Andrew Carmellini made his name with stints at Café Boulud and A Voce, although it wasn't until he opened his expansive Italian restaurant in Tribeca with the help of Robert De Niro and Spotted Pig restaurateur Ken Freidman that his culinary star really started to rise. Here, he cooks an upscale version of seasonally driven Italian cuisine. The orecchiette with homemade duck sausage and broccoli rabe is a particular crowd favorite, as are other rustic dishes like the wood-fired pork chop, shaved porchetta sandwich and the roasted Brussels sprouts with pecorino and pancetta. The encyclopedic wine list, organized by region of Italy, runs the gamut from $35 to $160, complemented by five impeccably chosen American craft brews on tap. While walk-ins are accepted, you might want to make a reservation; this place is extremely popular. The dining room toes the line between farmhouse and hip city bistro, pairing elements like white subway tile and industrial lighting fixtures with worn-in wooden tables and flowers.—Keith Wagstaff

Chef Andrew Carmellini's return to the stage, following A Voce, is a rustic neighborhood Italian resto at the core. And on Mondays, home of some of New York's best fried chicken. [Eater 38 Member]

  • Look out for luminaries of the financial, film, and TV industries at this casual Italian restaurant. The most popular dishes are "My Grandmothers' Ravioli" and the slow-cooked lamb sandwich, both $16.

One of our favorite sandwiches of the year is the slow-cooked lamb sandwich here, made with roasted peppers, cumin-scented yogurt, and a rosemary bun. Featured in Where to Eat 2011!

Recommended: Sheep's milk ricotta, blue crab crostini, lamb sliders, artichoke, ravioli, maltagliati with pesto, gigantoni with pork ragù, pistachio brown butter cake, rice custard gelato.
