Kinokuniya Bookstore

Map & Directions 10 W. 49th St.
New York, NY 10020

Village Voice's Description

Japanese expats practice the art of tateyomi

, or reading while standing, at this Rockefeller Plaza outpost of the venerable Kinokuniya booksellers. Jockey for space among them, and the occasional trendspotter, to peruse the latest fashion bulletins, from the zany (Cutie, Fruits) to the demure (Non-no, Spring) to the avant-garde (Ryuko Tsushin, So-en). For those put off by foreign text, occasional English buzzwords, such as "funky beach lady" and "gothic futurism," aid the imagination.

Tucked on the second floor of this Japanese bookstore is a counter selling perfect afternoon snacks. Food & Wine editor Dana Cowin loves the umebashi plum rice balls, she told us in her NY Diet.

Has a ton of cute stationary, pens, and notebooks in case you forgot yours or need new ones! Plus, it’s directly across from the tents.

Everyone loves a Japanese bookstore! Go upstairs to find the extensive Manga & architecture sections, and grab some coffee-flavor rolls and sushi in their Cafe Zaiya.

Lots of cute Japanese merchandise, books, stationary, clothes, pens, pop culture things with a decent cafe upstairs. Must see for anyone interested in anime/Japan in general.

Don't be surprised if the security follows you around if you aren't Asian. I love kino but their security often turns me off to shopping there as I am not a thief.
