Description

Village Voice's Description

Jean-Georges Vongerichten oversees one of the largest fine dining empires in the world. The menu of his New York flagship, located in Columbus Circle, carries hints of all of his travels, a plethora of international influences rooted in flawless French technique. Choose from a three-course prix fixe ($98) or seven-course tasting menu ($148), which includes his famous egg caviar, a creamy egg custard topped with caviar and served in the shell, and a lobster tartine bathed in a lemongrass-infused broth. Dessert isn't an afterthought; celebrity pastry chef Johnny Iuzzini works like a scientist, using all sorts of devices to alter consistencies and distill flavors. Lucky for those of us without an expense account or six-figure salary, Jean Georges has an incredibly accessible lunch deal, with two plates costing only $29 (with each additional plate costing $14.50). The dining room avoids being stuffy with sleek upholstered Eames chairs and a cool, silvery color palette.—Keith Wagstaff

The sweetbreads were nothing to write home about... More >>

  • Ed Koch may no longer be mayor of New York, but if he used Foursquare, he'd probably be the mayor of this restaurant. Once a month, Koch invites members of his administration to an elegant lunch here.

You can’t go wrong with the two-course $29 prix fixe lunch.
