Village Voice's Description

Despite the "all pickle" promise of the restaurant’s name, the menu's bedrock at Jacob's Pickles is a series of biscuit-borne sandwiches. The breakfast ones feature eggs, gravy, cheddar, ham, and mushroom gravy; while the more-substantial full meal variety stuff the fluffy, outsize biscuits with friend chicken, bacon, pickle slaw, and fried green tomatoes--creating a gutbomb of mind-boggling proportions, and making these "sandwiches" impossible to eat without a knife and fork. Oh, and as if that weren't enough, they come sided with cheese grits. There are omelets, pancakes, mussels, and seared salmon, as well, but these seem a little forced compared to the southern-food theme. Of course, you can sup entirely on pickles, which are available in myriad varieties in individual servings or ganged up in platters, but one suspects these are intended solely as drinking snacks at this spacious Upper West Side restaurant with a booze menu that overshadows the food. --Robert Sietsema

Comfortable southern and soul food restaurant with good pickles, biscuit sandwiches, and beer.

  • The rustic wood and brick interior pulls in a youngish crowd for regional beers such as Ommegang Abbey Ale and plates of buttermilk-fried chicken sandwiches, mac and cheese and fried pickles.

  • Village Voice on 04/22/13

Pickles are the bedrock of this fun-loving café that looks like an old-fashioned Jewish deli. They’re servin’ up Southern fare with a Jewish flare! Don’t miss the XL biscuit sandwich and fried Oreos.

Our favorite spot. Jacob is here every night & is more than happy to talk to every table. Fantastic food. We've tried & enjoyed everything on the menu. Great beer selection.
