Village Voice's Description

Tucked just below an art gallery on the corner of the Lower East Side and Chinatown is Home Sweet Home, a dank underground alley bar with a small performance space in the back. Home Sweet Home would be aptly named if your idea of home were a macabre dungeon with all the accouterments, including a ton of dead animals. It’s taxidermy, sure. But there’s a darker edge to Home Sweet Home. When the bar opened in 2009, it quickly established itself as a punk and metal spot with an outre edge. Hosting the final run of the revered Wierd nights--put on by the record label of the same name--helped to cement that legacy. Now, with residencies from DJs like Jonathan Toubin, the joint seems to bow toward a reputation for sweaty dance parties. Crowded, musty, and always a good time--or at least a time that's interesting. --Dale Eisinger

Tips from foursquare

  • Gilt City on 09/19/11

Full of knickknacks (and one arresting disembodied horse head), this underground dance club is filled with students and after-work hipsters looking to hit the dance floor and let loose.

  • Chris F. on 03/08/09

Great for late-night dance parties, although the bartenders here are horrible.

  • Shaners on 04/19/10

Come for the dancing, stay for the taxidermy

Wierd night every Wednesday. A little smoke machine never hurt anybody
