Village Voice's Description

You might have seen Hearth's executive chef, Marco Canora, on the Food Network's "Next Iron Chef America." It's definitely not all hype; Canora's cooking has been good enough to earn him a James Beard nomination for his cookbook and raves from most of New York¹s food media. The menu changes daily according to what is in season, with a style somewhere between contemporary American and Italian. A few examples: pan-seared skate over parsnip puree, stuffed cabbage with veal and sweetbreads, roasted and braised domestic lamb and snapper crudo. The man behind the wine list is Paul Grieco, who also operates the East Village wine bar Terroir, meaning the selection is often filled with unknown and rare bottles perfect for the wine geek looking to expand his or her knowledge. The dining room has a polished, intimate feel, lined with exposed brick and large bay windows that look out onto 12th Street.—Keith Wagstaff

Tips from foursquare

  • Bravo on 11/11/10

A fancy meal and killer desserts. I love the apple cider doughnuts. -Eric Wolitzky, Top Chef Just Desserts

  • Eater on 07/30/12

This restaurant serves one of the best ragus in the city, & the menu always includes a few terrific vegetables dishes, great meat entrees, and gracefully prepared fish courses. [Eater 38 Member]

  • Goes w/o saying...for a white, go riesling (ask the somm). For a high quality red, opt for the fruit-forward dolcetto (Piedmont); for a real monster, go w/ the excellent Bandol (Provence). agwine.com

  • Charlie O. on 01/04/11

Seriously one of the best meals I've had end to end. Most I've ever been excited about a desert menu.

  • Savored on 03/02/11

Chef Marco Canora's spaghetti and meatballs with a glass of red wine!
