Experimental Cocktail Club

Map & Directions 191 Chrystie St.
New York, NY 10002

Village Voice's Description

If there's such a thing as a "bartender's bar," then the Experimental Cocktail Club certainly qualifies as a "mixologist's mixology lounge." The Lower East Side speakeasy-inspired joint is both Parisian and New York prohibition-era inspired, with Bogart-approved couches and chairs. Although head bartender Nicolas de Soto is all about concocting new creations rather than perfecting old standards, as suggested by the name. His creations warrant the steep ticket price for their attention to detail. It's an uncommonly classy joint for the new party-centric LES. Go on a Tuesday when there is live jazz.

Tips from foursquare

  • Try the Green Horny, a carbonated vodka drink bottled in-house, or the Blackheart made from bourbon, maraschino liqueur, orange oils and coffee.

  • Serious Eats on 08/29/13

You'll find cocktails inspired by everything from gelato to seaweed salad at this Lower East Side cocktail den, which also has locations in Paris and London.

  • Eater on 02/19/13

Drinks from Nicholas de Soto, who's big on infusions and creating flavors of his own in lieu of liqueurs. The vibe is comfortable and cozy on weekdays, rowdy on weekends. The Kinkakuji is a must.

This place feels like Applebee's tried to do a speakeasy
