España/Streb Trapeze Academy
Brooklyn, NY 11211
Village Voice's Description
Williamsburg is all about being alternative, even when it comes to a workout—and this massive gym, school, and training facility fits the bill. Quietly warehoused on the neighborhood's rapidly developing south side, most residents aren't even aware of the Trapeze Academy next door. Alt-fitness mogul Elizabeth Streb teamed with Mexican circus brothers Noe and Ivan España in 1998 to create a trapeze arts school for all levels of experience. Training comes in 10-class packages but is also open to drop-ins. It is centrally located between the Bedford L and Marcy Avenue JMZ stations.
The STREB-España collaboration began in 1998 when Elizabeth Streb joined forces with Noe and Ivan Espana to create new work which explored their mutual fascination with the possibilities of human flight. Since then, this relationship has taken technical experimentation and innovation to a new level.
Noe and Ivan Españas' contribution to STREB and SLAM can be seen in their custom-designed trapeze rig, the specialized hardware and rigging mechanisms they've invented which are at the core of many of Elizabeth's choreographic explorations and the inspiration and entre they've provided into new worlds of action possibilities.
