Village Voice's Description

The Empire State Building is one New York attraction you should not be proud you missed. The fact that it's struck by lightning nearly 100 times per year should be enough to send you to the 86th story, and if it isn't, how about the amazing views? To avoid the throngs of people who don't understand how New York works, go during the fall season and buy your tickets at esbnyc.org. The last elevator to the top is at 11:15 p.m.

Tips from foursquare

  • HISTORY on 03/29/10

The Empire State Building opened ahead of schedule in 1931 taking only one year and 45 days to build. It is currently the tallest building in NYC.

  • Time Out New York on 10/31/11

The best touristy venue, this 80-year-old landmark is simply stunning. Check out the Art Deco flourishes in the lobby, restored to its original gilded splendor in 2009.

  • NHL on 04/26/13

Did you know? The Stanley Cup has visited the 86th floor here too!

  • Time Out New York on 09/10/10

Take the high-speed elevators 1,050 ft up to the Art Deco masterpiece’s 86th-floor observatory. Skyride Visitors can take a motion-picture tour of the city streets ($18).

  • Time Out New York on 11/22/11

Through an unmarked (and locked, sorry) door on the 102nd-floor observation deck is a narrow terrace that was once intended to be a docking station for airships moored to the mast
