Edi & the Wolf
New York, NY 10009
Village Voice's Description
Waltz into this new Alphabet City Austrian eatery from chef/owners Eduard Frauneder ("Edi") and Wolfgang Ban ("Wolf"), who also own Midtown"s Seasonal. The fare is generally impressive, not to mention pig-friendly. Standouts include the landjäger (dried sausage) and sliced pork belly ribbons, though you can get your schnitzel on, too, because what Austrian restaurant doesn"t serve those fried cutlets? However, it"s the quirky décor and buzzy ambiance that are the real draws: Think farmhouse tavern (or heuriger, as the Viennese would say) meets crazy grandma's attic. It"s undeniably theatrical, but actually pretty cool. It's the sort of spot with which to impress a first date who likes to keep up on the trends.
Tips from foursquare
Sweet Baby Jesus, the duck here will blow your mind. Schnitzel is also pretty good. Splitty-split for best results.
Expect a number of small, sharable options like pork belly with onions and horseradish and baby back ribs slathered in honey and beer. Drink German white wine too!
You simply must try the food!
Don't waste time, get Wiener Schnitzel. So good. (@dens)
If you are not here for brunch, come back for brunch. And then order the poached eggs w/ the pork belly. And then tweet me (@dens) to tell me how much it blew your mind.
