Village Voice's Description
Directly across the street from two Sri Lankan cafes, and on the same block as the towering Albanian mosque, Dosa Garden is the first south Indian restaurant in Staten Island. Not only does it dispense vegetarian dosas, iddlies, and utthapams, it supplements these with flesh-bearing dishes from south India, including the celebrated chicken chettinadu, shrimp fry, and deviled anchovies, along with a handful of Sri Lankan dishes such as egg appam and mutton kothu roti. On our first visit, we most enjoyed a non-menu special of uppma, a cream of wheat porridge studded with pistachios, curry leaves, cardamom, and black mustard seeds.
Tips from foursquare
This south Indian restaurant promotes its "chefs trained in Chettinad" as a point of pride, and rightly so: their rava dosa is up there with the city's best.
Nom nomnom nom... Veggie curry, nan, live the raita. Lunch Thali is a great deal.
The egg kothu roti is a staple of Sri Lankan cuisine; chopped up flatbread stir-fried with veggies, egg, and chiles, and shot through with coriander and curry leaves. A must-order.
They now have dark stout Lion beer. Must try if you like dark, bitter beer.
