Village Voice's Description

The room looks a Pinkberry crossed with a submarine. The jalapeno hush puppies are marvelously well fried, the fried trumpet mushrooms on the Greek salad look like onion rings, and the carrot risotto is a shocking shade of orange - like carrot distilled to its essence. It's all a bit trippy, not the least because this is the only vegetarian restaurant we know that might demand a Lipitor prescription. Much of the food comes in shades as bold as tropical fishes or Michelle Obama's dresses, like a vividly verdant spinach soup. A buttery puddle of grits is augmented with sweet corn kernels, wilted watercress, and pickled shiitakes, garnished with huitlacoche purée and ricotta salata, and topped with a tempura-fried egg. Pierce the crunchy tempura coating and the egg gushes creamy yolk. We hope this is the future of vegetarian restaurants.

Chef Amanda Cohen was the first vegetarian chef on Iron Chef America & has one of the most energy efficient kitchens in NYC, w/ an induction stove & self-filtering fryer.

  • Check out spunky chef, Amanda Cohen’s blog on the Dirt Candy website. She’s so passionate. - Inspector

Vegetables (a.k.a. dirt candy) are the stars of this menu, and as freaky as it may sound, one of the best dishes is (drumroll): tiramisu with eggplant.

  • Serious Eats on 03/11/13

Amanda Cohen's fun and whimsical temple to vegetables without pretense. Don't miss the hush puppies and save room for dessert.

  • Village Voice on 11/14/11

Winner of Best Vegetarian in the Village Voice 2011 Best Of issue! The jalopeno hush puppies are ruinously addictive.
