  4. Ferdinando's Focacceria

151 Union St., Brooklyn, NY 11231

  5. John's Deli

2033 Stillwell Ave., Brooklyn, NY 11223

Nothing in the borough is quite as challenging as the roast beef hero at John's Deli-masses of warm, pink meat on a crusty hero, topped with melting slices of mozzarella and... More »

  6. Ballaro

  • It's common to credit an 18th-century Earl of Sandwich with inventing his namesake creation. As the story goes, John Montagu was a gambling fanatic who couldn't step away from the cribbage table for a moment. He ordered a servant to put some cold roast beef between two slices of bread and bring it to him—so he could hold it in one hand and keep playing without besmirching the...

  • They say a good man is hard to find, but you know what's even tougher? A good mozzarella stick.

You scour the city looking for the perfect logs of deliciousness, but something is always wrong. They're rubbery with a plasticky snap. You detect a lingering freezer burn. The batons arrive overly greasy, weighed down in batter. You lament the watery marinara sauce to your...

Every time I go to New York, I have to get a pastrami on rye sandwich from here. It then becomes dinner on the train and lunch the next day because there’s just so much to eat one meal is just not enough. I love the fresher style pickles and the aged, garlic pickles, you can’t go wrong with either. If I have time to stop, and can actually get a table (it’s alw...
