Description

Village Voice's Description

Chef Pedro Hernandez Perez creates generous plates of home-style Mexican fare at this Upper West Side restaurant. The best dishes -- hearty, satisfying and a bit rough around the edges -- are
reminiscent of the staff meals Perez used to cook at Land Thai, where he was previously the sous chef. Slippery leaves of nopales appear in a rowdy little salad of jicama, radish, and string beans ($7), while tiny pork meatballs ($8) arrive hot in chorizo oil and cheese. Occasionally, lesser-known ingredients (like the sharp, cilantro-esque herb pipicha, and blooming wands of huauzontle) will appear in a dish, but the kitchen tends to play it safe. On any given night, the 26-seat spot is packed with cheerful locals sipping micheladas made with Valentina hot sauce, dipping puffy blue-corn chips into fresh guacamole ($6), so diners may have to wait for a free table. It's the kind of place locals go to order a beer and take a load off -- someone else is on dinner duty tonight. --Tejal Rao

Tips from foursquare

  • Start with antojitos—street snacks—like the fun meatball and chorizo fondue or the avocado cornbread. The avocado adds "a moist texture that people really enjoy and find interesting."

Slightly elevated Mexican home cooking in a cozy and fun setting. Though not a destination restaurant, it's a boon to the Upper West Side's Mexican food scene.

Good food, cool decor that felt very un-UWS, reasonable prices. Will definitely go back!

The octopus taco was fantastic. Even at the insane $4 a pop. Ceviche with conch. So good. The large dishes of stewed pork and fava beans. Even though I was sad Recipe closed. This is Muy bueno too.

Margaritas were meh and they charge you extra for chips.
