Village Voice's Description
If there is a Citarella near where you live, it will probably come in handy from time to time for grocery items or produce, or if you need an emergency salami for a cocktail party or something. But itas the fish department thatas worth traveling for. Go there when you are searching for something hard to find, like Orange Roughy from New Zealand. If itas in New York, itas likely to be here. For prime, dry-aged steaks, youad do better to find yourself an independent butcher, who will charge you about $10 less per pound. Same goes for the produce and pantry items. This store has high standards, but if you expend a little effort, you can find a lot of it elsewhere for less.

Tips from foursquare
Great seafood. -Carmen Gonzalez, Top Chef
Without a doubt, the freshest, highest quality seafood in the city.
Fruit is always fresh
Fresh chicken stock is pretty cool
Frugal gold: the Tuna here is better than the Tuna in most of the sushi places nearby. A small tuna steak is about $8, and you'll get WAY more sashimi for less money.
