Village Voice's Description

Part of the amazing dining strip sometimes known as Little India just north of Journal Square in Jersey City, Chennai Flavors specializes in the cuisine of Chennai, a city on the southeast Indian coast formerly known as Madras and famous for its textiles. The premises is pleasantly bare bones (no travel posters or religious statues) and roomy, too. The menu concentrates on southern Indian standards such as dosas and uthappams, which come with a pair of chutneys, including a unique, tomato-based one in addition to the coconut chutney standard on Newark Avenue. From there, Chennai Flavors’ sprawling bill of fare moves into coconut-washed seafood curries, mutton and lamb braises, tandoori-cooked meats and flatbreads, incendiary chicken dishes such as chicken chettinad, and, perhaps most unique of all, dishes involving boiled eggs, scrambled eggs, and masala-laced omelets. The food is nearly all cooked to order, so focus on the Bollywood-bearing monitors as you wait for your dishes to arrive.
