Village Voice's Description

Small plates continue to take over New York City, suckering the gullible into paying big bucks for tiny bites. Yet at Buvette, Jody Williams's new Francophilic "gastroteque," you'll actually leave-quelle surprise-charmed and with your belly full. The décor marries the hallmarks of French bistro-dom-brick walls, pressed-tin ceilings, long marble bar-with an eclectic, bohemian flair, and the food is equally Gallic. Dig your toast deep into the crock of divine rabbit confit, nibble on saucisson sec glistening in herb-flecked olive oil, and spoon up lentils simmered with kale, which come in a miniature pot so cute you'll want to take it home for keeps.

Tips from foursquare

  • Time Out New York on 10/31/11

The best birthday restaurant offers a homey French feast, centered on a shareable dish like roasted chicken, for groups of 8 to 12 on the long “kitchen table” in the back.

  • Time Out New York on 08/01/11

French-leaning small plates can be cobbled together to compose an excellent & affordable meal here. Try the classic croque madame ($10) or the brandade ($9), a pot of featherlight whipped salt cod.

  • Time Out New York on 10/05/11

Try the featherlight brandade. The whipped salt cod spread is one of our #100best dishes and drinks of 2011.

  • Mario B. on 03/09/11

Try the lentils w the classique aperitif!!

  • Fred W. on 05/10/13

If the Chevre is on the breakfast menu, get it
