Description

Village Voice's Description

In Brooklyn’s tiny DUMBO neighborhood is one of the city's most diverse (and smallest) parks, offering up programs of jazz, classical, and countless other events. And though there’s something for everyone--from Shakespeare to festivals of trumpet music to free movies to activities for children--the best part about this spot is the view. Lower Manhattan hardly looks as good except when you're sprawled out on a great lawn with a bottle of white wine at hand, fronted by the Metropolitan Opera or a great rock band. Hurricane Sandy couldn’t even squash the spirit here. The famous riverside carousel emerged from the flooded water unharmed. --Dale Eisinger

Tips from foursquare

  • Time Out New York on 10/31/11

The best waterfront in NYC offers a unique view of the lower Manhattan skyline, aquatic features, such as a salt marsh filled with native cordgrass, and Jane’s Carousel, a restored ride from 1922.

  • Starting in July 2010, the park's Pier 1 will have vendors serving tacos, crab rolls, wine, beer, and ice cream. (The city will make about $120,000 a year from the deal.)

  • HuffPost on 07/08/10

On extremely hot days, be careful -- in July, 2010, temperatures on the black rubber playground here reached a city-wide high of 171 degrees Fahrenheit.

  • Brooklyn Bridge Park offers spectacular photo opportunities of Manhattan and the Brooklyn Bridge. The rocky area by the water is the optimal spot for shots.

  • Time Out New York on 09/10/10

For an elevated water view climb the Granite Prospect, a set of stairs fashioned out of more granite salvaged from the scrapped Roosevelt Island Bridge project.
