Village Voice's Description
Right next to Prospect Park, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden is a verdant escape from the pulsing, postlapsarian havoc of the city. The 52-acre garden is a seductive expanse of wisteria-covered pergolas, towering oaks, flowering crab apple trees, and a vivid palette of exotic flora. Stroll through the Cranford Rose Garden and smell the heady perfume of hybrid tea roses, or walk to the overlook and its panoramic view. The most enticing section of the park is the recently restored Japanese hill and pond framed with weeping willows and a majestic torii that's painted an electric vermilion. The Garden's Steinhardt Conservatory also houses a temperature-controlled rainforest full of banana trees, philodendrons, and other waxy-leafed plants. Take the 2 or the 3 train to the Grand Army Plaza stop.
April-September,Tue-Fri 8am-6pm, Sat & Sun 10am-6pm; October-March, Tue-Fri 8am-4:30pm, Sat & Sun 10am-4:30pm
Tips from foursquare
The best place to find your inner Zen boasts relaxed, peaceful grounds. Claim a spot near the serene Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden, surrounded by Japanese myrtle and cypress trees, and bliss out.
Take in the beautiful foliage and treat yourself to ice cream at the café; in winter when it's too cold to stroll, visit the climate-controlled Steinhardt Conservatory.
The cherry blossom festival is a must-see. But any time of year this is a great escape from city life and a great place to take visitors who are convinced we have NO nature in nyc.
Cherry blossom festival!
A sanctuary in the middle of the nation's largest urban area. Make sure to check out Bluebell Wood, where 45,000 of the flowers bloom in a forest setting.
