Village Voice's Description

Designed and furnished by Ligne Roset, the famed French makers of chic, modern furniture, this East Village restaurant is a respite of grown-up cool in a neighborhood of casual eateries. Despite the sharp, geometric shapes and sleek light fixtures, the food of chef Scott Bryan (who formerly earned three stars for his work at Veritas) is decidedly warm and comforting. The contemporary American menu ranges from roasted organic chicken to rabbit pappardelle, available a la carte or in five-course ($65) or seven-course ($80) tasting menus. The 300-strong international wine list is complemented by a limited assortment craft beers on tap and a small menu of seasonal cocktails, as well a serious selection of whiskeys, aperitifs and digestifs. It isn't cheap to eat here, but you can save some cash by showing up Tuesday through Thursday or Sunday for the $35, three-course prix fixe dinner, or Monday, when the restaurant doesn¹t charge a corkage fee.—Keith Wagstaff

  • For a top flight red wine, opt for Domaine Courbis' St Joseph '07. St Joseph's syrah-based wines are medium bodied (lighter than others on the northern Rhone) and '07 was a good vintage. agwine.com
