Description

Village Voice's Description

Set among the old New York bohemian charm of Greenwich Village, 55 Bar has been serving affordable alcohol and jazz underground to faithful regulars and newcomers alike since 1919, surviving through the prohibition era.
With a focus on jazz and blues for guitar, 55 Bar is often a welcoming venue for musicians to try out new material and the no-stress attitude of the performers carries through to the staff and ultimately the customers too.
The right mood is set with a warming glow that emanates from the combination of old wood paneling and subtle wall lighting .

Great jazz bar...small, dark, bar...with world-class jazz. Comes complete with all the Village jazz purist uppity-ness. Great fun for the ignorant Wyoming posse to roll in and ruffle the feathers. Beer.

Great bar staff here! They're knowledgeable about jazz and just plain friendly souls!

  • Adam S. on 03/20/10

Drop in any night of the week for some of the best jazz and blues in the city. The cover is well worth it.

  • Zachary Adam C. on 09/21/13

One of the last standing true jazz speakeasy's left in the city. Never a bad show. If you want to see committed musicians making progressive and pure art their way, live then this is the place.
