Village Voice's Description

When the 21 Club opened its doors in 1929, getting a drink was illegal, which would explain the secret wine cellar hidden behind a camouflaged door. Thankfully Prohibition is over and you can now choose from the restaurant's 1,300 different bottles of wine from around the world. The restaurant itself is easy to find; just look for the lawn jockeys lining its famous iron gate in front. Enter to find the Bar Room, an old-school space with a ceiling filled with various toys and sports memorabilia from famous guests. Above you'll find Upstairs at 21, the 32-seat dining room that has been feeding high society types for decades, decorated with chandeliers and murals of 1930s Manhattan. This is a classy place: no sneakers or jeans allowed. Chef David Greeley's menu has that classic New York feel to it, with everything from a wild game mixed grill and Dover sole to a grilled filet mignon and steak tartare.—Keith Wagstaff

Coolest place.. Especially the private dining room. Thru the kitchen, then the private wine cubby holes. It seems like a cool cave until you see the magnificent wine cellar with a 25 person table set up in the middle..

Out of our standard vague anti-Williamsburg bias and our fear of saying the wrong thing vis-a-vis contemporary art, we're going to single out the 21 club as our internal A. List pick here.

Ask for a side of 21 Sauce, a spicy blend of ketchup, English mustard, Worcestershire, horseradish and white wine, the sauce has been a signature staple for over 60 years. Via CityEats.com

  • The lounge's dark wood paneling, fireplace, Frederic Remington horse paintings, the low lighting, and the men in suits and ties—despite a recent loosening of the dress code—still beckon another age.

  • Esquire on 01/31/11

Congratulations, you've found one of Esquire's Best Bars in America. We highly recommend getting a Southside.
