The “naked” in nearly naked doesn't refer to the actors' state of dress, but rather to the nakedness of the theater itself. This not-for-profit group of local artists, actors, writers and more aim to strip theater of the pressure to conform leaving just the essentials. The black box theater troupe feeds on providing Valley theater-goers with thought-provoking, at times risque, shows such as Spring Awakening, the Great American Trailer Park Musical and Hurly Burly. Damon Dering, the troupe's founding artistic director, is an Arizona native who wanted to break out of the viscous cycle of same-old-same plays and inability to push the boundaries. He founded Nearly Naked Theater with two friends and for years they bounced around from theater to theater, facing censorship for their content. Now you can find them as the resident troupe of the Phoenix Theater Little Theater and we're happy this colorful troupe finally has a place to call their own.
It's entirely possible that Damon Dering and David Weiss could have wound up somewhere other than Phoenix, in which case our city would be a lot less colorful, theater-wise. This trio of thespian talents has, for more than 10 years now, brought us a long list of avant-garde theater -- camp musicals like Batboy! and top-shelf dramas like Spring Awakening. Upcoming productions include David Nehl's Great American Trailer Park Musical, which we know Dering and friends will make as memorable... More »
We love pretty much everything this super-hip playhouse presents, but our hands-down favorite bit belongs to Nearly Naked's artistic director, Damon Dering. La Dering's curtain speeches -- especially those given on opening night -- tend to go on, but we don't care, because he's so charming. We suspect that what makes these homey homilies so very enchanting is that Dering so obviously loves his theater company. Often he speaks of a play as "a show I've wanted to produce for... More »
We figure the folks at our favorite alternative theater must hold weekly meetings to discuss ways to make us feel more at home when we visit their performance space at Phoenix Theatre, because we always feel like we "belong" when we're there. Maybe it's that they post not a random volunteer to greet us at the door to the theater, but rather one or more of the troupe's principal officers. Or maybe it's artistic director Damon Dering's funny, friendly curtain speeches, during which he always... More »
They're ambitious, giving us the naughty fun of The Rocky Horror Show and the deeply troubling misogyny of Hurly Burly in the same season. And they're showy as heck, offering up French drawing-room comedy with Les Liaisons Dangereuses and revisions on Christopher Marlowe with E2: A Heretical Adaptation of Edward II. But mostly, what Nearly Naked Theatre is is a whole lot of fun to attend, and not just because they manage to work dangling penises and curvy hooters into every single thing they... More »
Things were looking up, even before Nearly Naked Theatre's Oedipus for Kids! commenced on opening night. It's always nice to open a playbill and read that Johanna Carlisle is among the actors about to take the stage. And even nicer to read the... More »
Update: Oedipus for Kids opens Saturday, August 20; Spring Awakening opens June 15, 2012.) The Valley theater company that swears its name is not about running around with no clothes on but manages t... More »
