Description

The Dirty Projectors' David Longstreth once (possibly sarcastically) proclaimed that "Brooklyn is the center of the universe" onstage at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. His declaration is an apt description of the acts that perform here--on-the-rise, Brooklyn-based indie rockers and the freshest blog-anointed buzzbands from wherever. Inside, there are three bars--one in the basement, another upstairs, one more on the Shepard Fairey-decorated second floor--and a low stage. Naturally, bountiful stage-diving follows, allowing you to experience the hype firsthand.

Not a note of irony can be heard on Aaron Freeman’s Marvelous Clouds, the artist formerly known as Gene Ween’s glorious 2012 rediscovery of kitsch king Rod McKuen. While much mockery might be made of the 80-year-old’s poetry (Listen to the Warm... More »

  • 2007 | Best Brooklyn venue rebuilt to look exactly like a Manhattan venue

When Bowery Presents shut down semi-beloved B-burg haunt Northsix earlier this year and announced plans to revamp and reopen it as the grandly retitled Music Hall of Williamsburg, we expected a stylish-ass upgrade--the Times announced that the result would have "balconies and a big-city gloss." What we didn't expect maybe is that it would look exactly like the Bowery Ballroom. Shit is creepy. The layouts are now nearly identical: From the street you had downstairs to a lovely and... More »
