Murray’s Bagels in Greenwich Village bakes fifteen varieties of huge, chewy bagels--in traditional flavors from salt and poppy seed to Health Grain and cinnamon raisin--plus bialys. But you can’t get any of these bagels toasted. They’re hot from the oven, and that’s the point. Clean, efficient, and brightly lit, Murray’s is not a place to linger. It’s always packed, full of families and locals and tourists and couples in their 20s and NYU kids, all wiping cream cheese from the corners of their mouths. There’s often a long line, but the wait gives you a chance to decide which of the eleven cream cheeses you’d like before you get to the counter, where you’ll have to shout your order. But not in the mood for bagels? Murray’s also offers soups, sandwiches, salads, and rugelach--but at downtown prices. Coffee is mediocre, and the service can be rude, but if you’ve come for the bagels, they’re worth it. --Diana Clarke

What makes Murray's bagels better than the rest is that both sides are covered in toppings, ensuring that each bite is perfectly onion-y, poppy-y, or sesame-y. The bagels are soft and supple, with the perfect amount of chew. The only downside? Murray's refuses to toast its offerings, so you'll have to wait until you get back home if you like your bagels extra-browned. 500 Avenue of the Americas, 212-462-2830, murraysbagels.com More »
