Description

Mrs. White's is an institution when it comes to soul food in Phoenix. Décor is minimal, with the menu written on the walls, yet there's plenty of atmosphere. Just like visiting a small soul food eatery in the Deep South, with excellent catfish, smothered chicken, oxtails, greens, cornbread, and peach cobbler. Only problem with eating here is that afterward you may want a nap to recover. And that's a problem only if you can't sneak away from work long enough to take one.

  • 2011 | Best Fried Chicken

If ever there was a time for comfort food, this is the year, and when it comes to the simple satisfaction of consuming a hot plate of delicious Southern-fried chicken, Mrs. White's Golden Rule Cafe, the soul food eatery in downtown Phoenix, is the place to do it. Name your preference for dark or white meat, then wait for your plate of succulent fried fare to arrive -- steaming, golden brown, and coated in a crispy, lightly seasoned batter. With a choice of two sides including red beans,... More »

  • 2010 | Best Soul Food Restaurant

What's up with the quirky name of this restaurant It's all about eating on your honor. You see, the folks at Mrs. White's aren't keeping tabs on your order, at least in the form of a check. Nor are they even handing you a menu when you sit down to eat. The list of scrumptious options is scribbled all over the walls -- to-die-for fried catfish, greens, and grits among them. (You'll want to try it all once you get a taste of it.) Go ahead and splurge, but keep mental notes, because when... More »

  • 2007 | BEST SOUL FOOD RESTAURANT

When you're looking for a little Southern comfort, Mrs. White's Golden Rule Café will definitely do the trick. This modest downtown eatery, where the menu's written on the walls and customers use the honor system to pay the cashier, has been keeping locals fat and happy for 40-odd years, thanks to delicious fried catfish, golden hunks of fried chicken, chicken-fried steak, and thick, juicy pork chops. Swab up that luscious gravy with a crumbly piece of cornbread, and don't forget to... More »

  • 2006 | BEST SOUL FOOD RESTAURANT

The name sounds prim and proper, but Mrs. White's Golden Rule Cafe is all about guilty pleasures. We figure that's what's kept this restaurant in business for 42 years. Where else can you go for such perfectly crisp, golden fried catfish, savory Southern fried chicken, or thick, sizzling pork chops This is the place to get your Dixie fix, right down to the buttery cornbread and homemade lemonade. All the dinners are only $8.80, a number you'll soon have memorized after a meal here -- it'... More »

  • 2004 | BEST GREENS

Greens are to soul food what tomatoes are to Italian cuisine: a culinary sine qua non. Indeed, every soul food place in existence has its take on this Southern-born side dish, sometimes just using collards and sometimes mixing them with other leafy greens, such as kale, turnip, and/or mustard greens. Our complaint regarding those served at many soul food joints in the Valley is the over-use of salt, which overpowers the savory taste of this boiled vegetation, and kills any delight to be had... • 2000 | Best Place to Eat If You're Starting a Diet Tomorrow

Call it the dieter's bachelor party. The choice of where to indulge in a final meal before bowing to Jenny Craig is simple: Mrs. White's. There's no need to get gourmet with descriptions here -- just imagine the best-ever Southern fried chicken, pork chops, smothered chicken, chicken and dumplings, chicken-fried steak and fried fish ever to bless your tongue. Picture great puddles of gravy, black-eyed peas, greens and home-style peach cobbler. Visualize massive portions that crowd... More »
