Motor City's windows are concealed by red drapes, but what lies behind them is revealed every five minutes. In these intervals, like clockwork, a go-go dancer pushes them aside and wiggles her dollar-bill-stuffed bikini bottom, summoning you like a siren. Here in this NASCAR-friendly den of sin, rockabilly tunes and hot-rod decorations (salvaged "Detroit" signs, race-car seats, etc.) prevail. And though the sexed-up pit-stop look seems decidedly male-centric, there are nonetheless an equal number of ladies milling around. Perhaps Socrates was right: "Chicks dig fast cars."
In February we reported Motor City Bar would "close in the next few months" after the landlord decided not to renew its lease. EV Grieve recently learned that the bar the Voice dubbed "Best Rock Bar... More »
It looks like the Lower East Side will lose another one of its most beloved bars. Max Fish declared in an online petition that it will move to 132 Metropolitan Ave. in Brooklyn, and the bar is seeki... More »
"The Pink Pony was a place where you didn't have to leave your soul outside," Lucien Bahaj said on Tuesday morning at Lucien, the French bistro he's run on the Lower East Side since 1998. Bahaj took... More »
So many life-changing things hail from Detroit: Motown, The White Stripes, Insane Clown Posse, this Lower East Side's bar Wayne County spirit. A brick-walled rock-and-roll dive with a seedy-mechanic theme, Motor City Bar has Ford-tribute decor, hubcaps on the walls, a car-seat bench, and an affinity for the Red Wings. Almost as admirable as the cash-only joint's stiff drinks and kick-ass hometown allegiance is that the Ludlow spot maintains one of the more genius bar-family inventions: a... More »
If the steering-wheel bathroom doorknob, the passenger-seating couches, or the car-model names mounted on the bar don't tip you off, then the heavy taps mounted with old pistons (no, they don't look like Bill Lambeer or the Microwave) will. MOTOR CITYain't no biker bar, but a spacious, rocking ode to Detroit Rock City, replete with the Igster booming from the speakers. More »
Sloe gin and Coke, known as Mexican Cough Syrup to its few fans, is too sickly sweet to even be a girl drink. Ordering is a masochist's job: bartenders frown, make you repeat yourself six times, or have to dig around the bar just to find their one bottle of sloe gin. But at MOTOR CITY, the bartender will actually laugh at you, and ask if you want a friggin' paper umbrella. Don't say yes. More »
The Bowery's nowhere near as desolate or dangerous as downtown Detroit, but between the run-down buildings and ethnic enclaves the two locales definitely share a sensibility. Too bad then that MOTOR CITY BAR, the only New York drinking establishment to pursue that elusive Motown chic, comes up a little short: A Woodward Avenue sign and Ford logo are a nice start, but considering the range of memorable bands and sports teams Detroit's turned out, the walls (and the jukebox) are a little...
