There are a few foods that Valley visitors must eat while in town – and that former Phoenicians most likely miss – and somewhere at the top of that list are tamales. For a taste of handmade-with-love tamales, a trip to Molly’s Tamales in Glendale is in order. The small corner shop features an unthinkable variety of the masa-based dish, from the traditional like elote (green chili cheese) to the more exotic like salmon. All flavors are made lard- and shortening-free, opting instead for oil and occasionally butter to keep them light, moist, reasonably healthy, and vegetarian-friendly. Meatless options include Sonoran specialty nopal (cactus) as well as zucchini with mushrooms and cheese. Vegans can get in on the action too with two varieties, including Southwest (black beans, corn, and chili with chipotle sauce). And for a special occasion, call ahead to order dessert tamales like Roxy Road (chocolate chips and marshmallows) and pineapple with raisins.
