Description
The classic San Francisco Italian deli has been slicing up coppa, salame, mortadella, and prosciutto since 1896 (since 1913 at its present location). The old place is fragrant with a marvelous garlicky perfume of reggiano, finocchiona, green olives, balsamic vinegar, and just about every other old-country sausage, pasta, cheese, condiment, and cooking ingredient you can imagine. The friendly counterstaff are wizards at assembling bountiful sandwiches ideal for Washington Square picnicking, or you can get some freshly prepared ziti, ravioli, or lasagna to go. Don't forget the biscotti and a bottle of vino.
